Altenbeken Viaduct
Altenbeken Viaduct

On a pretty dull day in the mid of January, I decided to take a short drive to Altenbeken. This small town owes its existence pretty much to the railway lines that branch from here. The railway viaduct, completed in 1853, is the most remarkable structure there. While not particularly high, the almost 500m long bridge spans the valley below with 24 arcs, making it the longest limestone bridge in Europe.

At night, the bridge is usually illuminated from below, leaving the railway line itself completely in the dark. With the slightly foggy air, the illumination effect was even more pronounced.

This photograph was made with a Canon EOS 6D and an EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens at 200mm. The exposure was 10 seconds at f/5.6 and ISO 200. The photograph was edited in Adobe Lightroom. You can find this photo along with others from my trips in my local area in my album Around Paderborn.
