On Utrecht Cathedral
Utrecht, Netherlands: On top of the Cathedral

One of my best friends lives in the Netherlands close to the city of Utrecht. Thanks to her and a friend of hers, I had the opportunity to visit quite a few places in my neighbouring country and am always surprised how little I know of the many interesting and beautiful places there. This time, after a walk through the city of Utrecht, we decided to climb up the tower of the cathedral.

Utrecht’s cathedral (Dom van Utrecht) once was the largest church in the Netherlands, having been completed in the late 16th century after more than 250 years of construction work or breaks in between. Unfortunately, the church only stood for another 150 years before in a massive storm in 1674 the nave collapsed. In its place there is now a square with trees, the Domplein, with the eastern part of the church. On the western end, there is the 112m high Domtoren (Cathedral Tower), the highest of the country and icon of the city. There is a good view of the city from up there; however, I was more interested in looking further up towards the sky into which the tower reaches.

This photograph was made with a Canon EOS 6D and an EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens. The exposure was 1/40 second at f/5.6 and ISO 100. The photograph was edited in Adobe Lightroom. You can find this photo along with others from my trips different areas of the Netherlands in my album Netherlands.
