West Coast: Waves Rolling In On the Coast
West Coast, New Zealand: Waves Rolling In On the Coast

The South Island’s West Coast is famous for its rough conditions. Not only is there plenty of rain (at least usually; when I visited this time, a long dry spell had led to shortages in water supply – I guess, they have never experienced that before around here). Strong winds blowing over the Tasman Sea and rough sea with huge waves that work on the coast line have formed – and continue to do so – impressive rock formations. One of the best known places in that respect is Punakaiki where the rocks look like giant heaps of pancakes. A little north of Punakaiki the short Truman Track leads to some more interesting (quite different) rocks.

The photograph was made with a Canon EOS 6D and an EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens. The exposure was 1/640 second at f/8 and ISO 200. The photograph was edited in Adobe Lightroom. You can find all of these photos along with others from this journey across New Zealand’s South Island in my album New Zealand 2013 or on Flickr.
